Bern and surroundings

Bern is the capital and political centre of Switzerland. A great many international agencies and organisations, as well as companies operating at home and abroad, have their headquarters in Bern.

Bern's historic old town as been a UNESCO world heritage site since 1983. Bern also has a rich cultural offering, with some of the most important museums and galleries in Switzerland. Bern scores again when it comes to eating out: from cosy cellar vaults to gourmet pubs, from wine bars to discotheques, both connoisseurs and night-owls will find something.

Thanks to its central location, Bern is ideally placed for trips all over Switzerland: popular destinations like the Bernese Oberland (Jungfrau Region), Emmental, the area around Lake Geneva or Valais (the Matterhorn) are suitable for half-day or day trips, not to mention the cities of Basel, Geneva, Lausanne, Lucerne and Zurich.
